Why is it still so hard to talk about mental health?

If you struggle with talking about your mental health you are not alone.  Unlike physical health conditions,  mental issues are often seen as a sign of weakness. We share details of our physical health so openly --   our family member with diabetes, our kid's broken bone, our battle against the flu. But we often stay silent about our struggles with depression, anxiety or substance abuse. You would never tell someone with diabetes or hypertension to "just get over it" or "give it time" so why is this advice so often given to people struggling with mental issues? According to the National Institute of Mental Heath, nearly 1 out of 5 adults live with a mental illness. The truth is, mental issues are hard, they are uncomfortable and they are isolating. The shame and stigma that people feel are often the biggest obstacles they face with getting the help that they need.  However, staying silent is not the way out. Remember - struggling with any type of mental issue does not make you weak. Depression does not define you. Open up, get the conversation started and get the help you deserve. Get your life back.
